Listings of All Mesothelioma Clinical Trials

Update: January 2012

The National Cancer Institute currently lists 72 clinical trials for treatment of patients with mesothelioma, of which 39 are in the United States . Clinical trials are studies designed to find better treatments for cancer patients. U.S. trials are taking place through out all of the states but the majority of trials are found in large states like California , New York , Illinois and Texas.

There are fourteen phase I trials, twelve phase II trials and only one phase III trial in the U.S. The phase III trial is an international, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial to evaluate the clinical efficacy of palifosfamide-tris administered with doxorubicin in combination, compared with doxorubicin administered with placebo in front-line patients diagnosed with metastatic soft tissue sarcoma (STS).

Phase III studies test a new drug, a new combination of drugs, or a new surgical or radiation procedure in comparison to the current standard. A participant will usually be assigned to the standard group or the new group at random (called randomization). Phase III trials often enroll large numbers of people and may be conducted at many doctors' offices, clinics, and cancer centers nationwide. Patients often start with phase III trials because more is known about the new treatment approach.

Trials often open and close. To see the most current patient statements on these trials go to the National Cancer Institute's clinical trials search page. Select mesothelioma from the list of cancers and then select treatment under the TYPE OF TRIAL, and hit search at the bottom of the page. You can also see the health professional statements that include the detailed eligibility criteria for the trials, specific locations, and contact information if you want to take part in a trial.
